Young job seeker challenges Government mandatory work scheme

Interesting judicial review challenge this week by a young Geology graduate who was required to work unpaid for Poundland for 2 weeks or lose her Jobseeker’s Allowance. She had apparently been doing unpaid voluntary work in a museum after graduating.

The same item was covered late last year in The Guardian as part of a wider piece on young jobseekers. It reported that they are exempt from receving the minimum wage for up to 8 weeks under a different government work experience programme and highlighted accounts of placements in major supermarkets and other big-name businesses.
