Don’t delegate your social media to an intern

by on February 1, 2013

This might be a lesson from yesterday’s widely reported Twitter incident where angry HMV workers took over the company’s official Twitter feed to vent their fury over sacking – or ‘mass execution’ as they described it as they tweeted ‘live from HR’.

Panic in HMV head office seems to have followed: “Just overheard our Marketing Director (he’s staying, folks) ask “How do I shut down Twitter?” was another tweet.

The tweets included the information that “these accounts were set up by an intern (unpaid, technically illegal) two years ago.”

On BBC Radio 4’s Today programme this morning, a speaker suggested that using interns was not an untypical situation, or at least that many organizations specifically recruited young people to carry out their social media functions because of their perceived skills in this area.
