Australia’s age discrimination commissioner

by on May 8, 2012

I hadn’t realised that Australia has an age discrimination commissioner but it does and she’s Susan Ryan.

In this piece, she discusses her role at the Australian Human Rights Commission. The Commission has just issued a paper entitled ‘Grey Areas: Age Barriers to Work in Commonwealth Laws’. This seems to be the starting point of an enquiry into the legal barriers to what is described as ‘mature-age participation in the workforce and other productive work’.

‘Other productive work’ is an interesting phrase: volunteering? caring? unpaid consultancy?

The Commission is inviting organizations and individuals interested in reforming laws that are age discriminatory to make a submission on their paper. It’ll be fascinating to see what gets submitted.
