New year but same ‘old’ story for jobless women says @PatcohenNYT

by on January 12, 2016

Catching up on the news stories that we missed during our blogging break, was this rather depressing headline from the New York Times front page on January 2:

Over 50, Female and Jobless even as others return to work

This piece focuses on the plight of the long-term unemployed, particularly on those women who lost their jobs during the last recession and, despite a general economic recovery, still find themselves unemployed.  According to statistics presented in the article, women over 55 are particularly struggling, despite that fact that overall older workers generally have better employment rates than younger ones.  Using personal stories the article reviews the usual combination of factors – including discrimination, career breaks and gender career silos – that contribute to these figures.  As usual it is the personal quotes that bring the dilemma to life, including one interviewee who comments: “I did everything you’re supposed to do,” she said. “Now I’m on the other side of the rainbow, and it’s not pretty over here.”
