Missing Million (part 3): Recommendations for action re older workers

Last week saw the publication of the third and final report in the Missing Million series produced in partnership between Business in the Community (BITC) and the International Longevity Centre (ILC-UK) which have been based on research carried out also with PRIME. It highlights major themes from the earlier reports and sets out recommendations for business and government to address in order to help people stay in work for longer.

The key findings, as summarised on the BITC website, are:

  • “The world of work needs to change now, to encourage and enable people to continue working into later life.
  • Older workers are vital for the future of the economy.
  • Industries with a higher population of workers aged over 50 will need to ensure they can retain and recruit the older workers who are fundamental to their workforce.
  • More than a million people aged over 50 have been forced out of work involuntarily.
  • Business must address barriers to the recruitment of older people.
  • The next government must legislate for a right to request flexible working from day one of a job”.

Against this background, BITC have also launched a campaign with the aim of “helping businesses meet the challenges of an intergenerational workforce and reap both the commercial and social rewards”. They are looking to  build a leadership team for this endeavour (as set out here on their website).

We just noticed however that the name of their campaign is Age at Work!

We can’t blame them, it’s a great name – as we know having been using it for our research project, this blog and our twitter account for some time. In fact I used it as part of my PhD thesis title before that.

But we just want to point out, for the avoidance of any doubt or confusion, that we are not in any way connected with the BITC campaign and the fact that it has the same name as us is a complete coincidence.
