Two generations of retired together

by on March 12, 2015

This interesting personal account in the New York Times highlights a new phenomena in the states – families in which two generations are retired.  This story highlights the lives of a 62 year old woman and her 88 year old father who are both now retired.

The prevalence of this is unclear and as the story highlights, there do appear to be assumptions about the younger-retired automatically taking on care responsibilities for their older-retired family member.  However this may well be just a passing phase, with an increase in the age that we have children and planned rises in retirement age, perhaps it is more likely that we will see older family members working together than retiring together in the future.
