ELSA English Longitudional Study of Ageing

by on October 10, 2013

The ELSA website is a must visit for any researcher interested in looking at age and ageing of what they call ‘a maturing population’. Data from ‘a representative sample of the English population aged 50 and older’ is being collected over a period of 12 years and many useful reports are already available.  Sadly for us however the research focuses more on health and social issues than on work, though there is some data related to post-retirement labour market activity which we will be looking into.  The rationale for the focus on 50 and older is not really set out on the website main pages and while there is some interview data the majority is collected via self-report questionnaire.  Nevertheless a very extensive academic study and worth following with interest, the website also contains many useful links to related studies in other countries.
