IBM remove job advert specifying required graduation dates

by on September 9, 2013

Widely reported across the US is this story that computing giant IBM specified graduation dates in recent job advert, which was particularly sensitive as there had been recent lay-offs at the same plants.  The ad required that applicants have a graduation date after 2010.

The news stories are all rather brief so it will be interesting to see if there is further follow up in the next few days.  IBM’s response seems to simply be that the wording of the job advert was a ‘thoughtless mistake’.  Though in a later report quotes IBM saying “It was a mistake and it’s been fixed. According to IBM  policy, job applicants are considered based on skills and qualifications.”

Many of the news outlets attributed the story to Alliance@IBM, who also post the original job advert on their webpage.  Interesting that the graduation date specification appears separately and in capital letters – difficult to see how that can have been overlooked in the checking and sign off procedures that usually exist within HR departments so I am guessing there are some internal investigations to follow.
