Fergie’s retirement is big news

by on May 9, 2013

As we tweeted yesterday, the retirement of Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is big news.  Yesterday we highlighted the Independent’s focus on a ‘healthy’ retirement.  Unsurprisingly the BBC sport pages are awash with plaudits from the great and the good but also discuss the challenge of succession planning, wondering how you “replace the irreplacable”.  The Daily Mail also provide extensive coverage but highlight the financial impact on Manchester United’s share price which fell by 4.5% yesterday.  Amongst the reaction was a tweet by TAEN highlighting that other long serving retirees: Never mind Sir Alex, Nurse Brenda bows out after 50 years of caring.  Will Sir Alex’s retirement bring useful attention to issues facing older workers or is football really the main concern?
