6 Billion Euros for Youth Employment: For or Against?

by on April 30, 2013

This video features two European Parliamentarians with different points of view on the EU’s Youth Employment initiative.

The case against raises an issue I hadn’t heard in this context before, namely that it could cause a brain drain from the worst affected EU countries.  The argument is that because the scheme is not compulsory for all member states it’s likely to be implemented only in those countries that can afford it. These states will then poach the best and brightest young candidates away from their home countries where they are needed most to help re-build the economies.

And I also learnt that the German for ‘brain drain’ is…’brain drain’.
