“Cash is on the table” – paying for younger workers

by on January 15, 2013

This is the rather blunt message from the Department for Work & Pensions in a new Government campaign urging businesses to employ a young person.

Called ‘Youth Contract: Works for Me‘, the campaign aims to raise the profile of the Youth Contract, a £1 billion package to address youth unemployment by helping to find jobs for 18-24 year olds.

As reported here in the DWP press release, the Minister for Employment, Mark Hoban is telling businesses: “We’ve got up to £2,275 of cash sitting on the table waiting for you to take it up. So take on a young person, who’s been out of work for six months, and the cash is yours.”

A survey last year reported low awareness of the scheme amongst employers; presumably saying that ‘cash is on the table’ is designed to focus attention and get the message across.
