Underemployment and the older worker

by on December 4, 2012

Following publication of the ONS figures last week on underemployment, BBC Radio 4’s PM programme last Friday featured contributions from older workers who are experiencing this phenomenon.

A number of them pointed out that they are being required to wait longer before being eligible to receive their pensions and are encouraged into self-employment. One man spoke of ‘under-self-employment’ as a neglected category and another of his move from full-time employee to part-time contract worker with the loss of associated benefits such as pension contributions.

The link to the programme is here via the BBC iPlayer. The relevant section is at 48.18 minutes in and it’s available to hear for another 3 days.
