Older women and the ‘age’ question

by on November 16, 2012

Very topically – given this week’s NDA seminar on ageism and sexism in the media – a group of female politicians booed a reporter in the US who asked a question about their leader’s age.

NBC reporter Luke Russert asked Nancy Pelosi (who had just announced that she intended to remain leader of her party in the House of Representatives) whether it might be time to make way for younger leadership.

Nancy Pelosi has been leader of the Democrats in the House for 10 years and was its first female Speaker. She pointed out that the same question hadn’t been directed at Mitch McConnell, the 70 year old (male) Republican leader.

Plenty of coverage of this exchange in the US press, as in this article in the Washington Post.
