Ageism and Sexism in the Media
We attended a seminar yesterday on Ageism and Sexism in the Media hosted by the New Dynamics of Ageing Programme and Age UK. Its objectives were:
- To focus public attention on how older people, particularly older women, are portrayed in the media
- To bring researchers and policy makers together to discuss this major issue
- To discuss a new agenda to combat ageism and sexism in the media
It was a thought-provoking event. The sense of injustice in terms of the treatment, portrayal and representation of older people, particularly older women, in and by the media was palpable. The presentations from Dr Ros Jennings (University of Gloucestershire) and Dr Lorna Warren (University of Sheffield) were both excellent.
The NDA will be posting material from the seminar on their website so we’ll provide the link to that in due course.
