Youth unemployment

by on November 7, 2012

We’ve heard a lot in the UK, and the rest of Europe, about youth unemployment.

Here, the BBC’s Louise Redvers reports on the situation in South Africa where up to 50% of younger people are without jobs.

Her report looks at a Government funded scheme to create jobs for young people. As we’ve seen elsewhere, this (inevitably) leads to questions about the appropriateness of Government subsidies, the effect of such schemes on job prospects for older workers, the quality of the work such schemes produce and the extent to which this is at the expense of ‘proper’ jobs. It’s interesting to see these discursive patterns.
