National Older Worker Career Center
The NOWCC is a not-for-profit agency based in Washington, DC and is currently celebrating its 15th birthday.
It targets older workers (defined as 55 and over) and runs two specific programmes.
One is a partnership with the Natural Resources Conservation Service in which experienced workers are recruited into positions (such as soil specialists and resource conservationists) that support conservation and environmental protection efforts. The other is a public-private partnership with government agencies in which older workers take on jobs (as administrative assistants, chemical engineers, database administrators etc) at the Environmental Protection Agency.
These programmes offer older workers a mixture of part- and full-time work, though all of it on a one year renewable agreement. Those who get work on the schemes are referred to as ‘enrollees’ rather than employees. Interesting!
