Lookism on TV: Older female newsreaders

by on May 17, 2012

More on the debate regarding older women on TV. Research conducted at the University of Worcester (see press release here) found that female newsreaders are forced to become like “Stepford Wives” – having cosmetic procedures including eye lifts, Botox and teeth whitening – as the grow older if they want to keep their jobs.

The researchers, Claire Wolfe and Dr. Barbara Mitra, say in their report: “The pressure on female newsreaders to look physically attractive and young is part of the wider patriarchal power structures that dominate our society, as well as media organisations. We wonder, therefore, whether we will ever see a woman with grey hair reading the news.”

A full copy of the report is available to view from this link.
