Starting a new career – like teaching – at any age?

by on March 15, 2012

This is Teach First Week when this education charity (which recruits ‘exceptional graduates’ into teaching to address educational disadvantage) invites some ‘distinguished professionals’ to go back to school and teach a lesson as part of an awareness campaign.

Editor of The Independent Chris Blackhurst reflects on teaching a history class as part of Teach First Week.

He says ‘I realised that I could also do it. I loved every moment. I’ve always suspected, ever since childhood, that I’d liked to be a teacher. I still would. Perhaps Teach First should begin an offshoot for older would-be teachers and I would sign up: Teach Last.’

This made me wonder whether Teach First does in fact accommodate career changers or other ‘older would-be teachers’.
