The ageing workforce in Australia: Flipping the age pyramid

by on March 6, 2012

Interesting analysis of the ageing workforce in Australia in this article and how to respond to ‘flipping the age pyramid’. This is a reference to how greater longevity and lower birth rates are  reversing the traditional shape of the population ‘with a broad, youthful base and a small, elderly top’ in many developed countries.

The author suggests that ‘attacking age discrimination, up-skilling older workers and legislating so that workers pay more superannuation’ are possible ways to tackle the challenge. It is also suggested that Australia has a competitive advantage over many European countries with similar ageing workforce profiles but with much higher levels of domestic debt.
