Apprenticeships, work programmes and younger workers

by on February 13, 2012

Last week was National Apprenticeship Week (apparently) and there was criticism of the various schemes currently on offer, many of which are targeted at the young, in this piece in the Guardian.

There are also calls from the unions for high street chains to abandon the practice of taking the unemployed (again, often the young) on temporary placements as part of Government programmes. These are said rarely to result in jobs and have been criticised for requiring ‘work for no pay’ under threat of losing benefits. Waterstones and Sainsbury’s have recently pulled out of these schemes.
