Elderly told: go back to work and downsize

Remarks made during the Prime Minister’s trip to Sweden are attracting a lot of attention, judging by the thousand or so comments on this article in the Telegraph.

David Halpern, currently on secondment to No.10 as Head of the Behavioural Insight Team, has suggested that those over state pension age should go back to work. “Work matters, particularly for older people, not just for money, but absolutely for social contact”, he says.

It’s also the additional comments about linking retirement age to life expectancy and about older people downsizing their homes which are proving very controversial. Perhaps also the sense that older people are the target of being ‘told’ what to do.
